Unhappy on the Job Here#8217;s What You Can Do

Unhappy on the Job Here8217s What You Can Do Nearly one in five Americans report that they are dissatisfied with their job. At least thats the data according to recent research by Rasmussen College. More than half of the 2,000 U.S. adults surveyed between February 2014 and March 2014 reported that they dont have significant growth opportunities in their current positions. The survey also revealed that nearly two-thirds of participating workers have considered quitting their job. The reasons?-Dont receive enough compensation (51 %)-Lack of advancement opportunities (31 %)-Being unfilled (26 %)-Too stressful (24%)-Not using their education or skills (21 %)If youre dissatisfied with your current working situation, youll inevitably slip into disengagement, which quickly leads to overall unhappiness. And what worker wants to commit 8+ hours each day to a role he or she doesnt enjoy? I cant think of any one who fits that bill. So, if youre finding your job less than desirable, dont panic all hope is not lost. Margaret H. Greenberg and Senia Maymin, Ph.D., Live Happy columnists and authors of the geschftsleben book Profit from the Positive Proven Leadership Strategies to Boost Productivity and Transform Your Business, have teamed up to help you and the myriad amount of people who have found themselves in similar circumstances.Below are four steps from (and written by) Greenberg and Maymin to help you identify and assess unhappiness on the job, and transform it into the oppositeWhat makes you stay? Is it really the job itself that you dislike, or is it something else? A toxic boss or colleagues who dont pull their weight? Maybe you dont feel valued or youre not being compensated fairly? Maybe your work schedule has become all-consuming? Make a list of whatever you dislike, and then make another list of what makes you stay. Ask yourself, What makes me stay in a job Im not happy with? A re there really compelling reasons for why you stay in a job you hate, or are you playing it safe? To bust through the inertia, identify just one small change you can make that will have the biggest, most positive impact on your work life.Play to your strengths. When we dont like our job, it is very likely that we are not playing to our strengths. Sometimes were not even aware of our strengths or we take them for granted. A simple way to uncover your strengths is to ask yourself, What kinds of work really energize me? The flipside is to ask yourself, What kinds of work sap my energy? Now go ask three trusted colleagues, What do I do best? Whats a story of me at my best at work? Then try to use those strengths as much as possible in your current job. First of all, youll be happier. Secondly, youll be curating your resume more toward those things you enjoy doing when it comes to a next job.Dabble. Professor Herminia Ibarra of INSEAD Business School has found that people who dabble in ot her areas of work have an easier time making a transition to a new line of work. For example, if your company has employee resource groups (ERGs) related to an area you are passionate about, such as technology, women in leadership, diversity, community service, or wellness in the workplace, get involved. Not only will you get to do work in an area that interests you, but youll expand your network. Youll be exposed to people in your company who can also provide career advice and support. No ERGs? No problem. Volunteer in a different area, department, or on a project. Get involved dont wait to be asked to the dance.Job craft. If you have a good relationship with your boss, have a talk with him or her. Talk about your strengths and ask what he/she sees as your strengths. Do what you see and what he/she sees align? Also talk about areas, projects, or work where you would like to gain more exposure. Work together to craft your job to fit closer to your strengths and professional goals.

7 Phrases You Should Never Have on Your Resume

7 Phrases You Should Never Have on Yur Resume7 Phrases7 Phrases You Should Never Have on Your ResumeWhen I was a teenager, the comedy of George Carlin, who died this week, was a godsend that could brighten the worst of days. At a time in your life when you could be content one minute, depressed the next, and confused less than a minute later, listening to George wax humorous about the contradictions, hypocrisy, and the usually public taboos of the time helped me put it all in perspective. To honor the comic geniuss quintessential sketch 7 Words You Can Never Say on TV, heres a list of seven words and phrases you shouldnt include on your resume. Chances are this list wont serve as the basis for a Supreme Court case, as Georges did.1. Effective CommunicatorThis phrase doesnt distinguish you from other job applicants, but thats exactly what you need to do today to be called in for an interview. Hiring managers assume you can communicate well, so, if you dont know how either by email or w ith your voice you have about as much chance of getting hired as a tree.2. Detail-OrientedEvery job requires a certain level of attention to detail. So, again, this wont help your resume or your chance at landing an interview. The best thing to do here if you know the job youre applying for calls for this trait in particular is to be ready to explain in an interview how your high level of attention to detail resulted in a key accomplishment in your current or previous job.3. Highly SkilledThis is a nothing phrase. You have skills, and you can use some or all of those skills in some kind of job that calls for them. The only way you dont have skills is if youve been doing here it comes nothing. Do you believe you have more skills than the average applicant? Show, dont tell.4. ReliableYoud better be if you get the job. Again, this is a trait that can go without saying. It just doesnt distinguish you from the others who may want the same job.5. References Available Upon RequestThis w as regular practice in the world of resumes that has become pass. Always assume that an employer will want to check references, or at least conduct a Web search on you and what youve accomplished. So, dont state this on your resume, but do make koranvers you have the names and contact information of pre-screened potential references if youre called in to interview. And keep those people in the know on your possible job change so they wont be surprised should the hiring manager call them.6. Energetic Team PlayerAs opposed to what? A Lethargic Loner? Just about every organization wants someone who has the energy to do a job and can work effectively with others, and if they dont get that vibe from you, those empty words on a resume wont convince them.7. Able to Meet DeadlinesHeres a question to ask yourself If you were to meet just one of every 10 deadlines, how long would you last in your job? Once again, this is an obvious trait that merely says you can do the bare minimum. There are other words and phrases that could have made this list, but, hey, I limited myself to seven in honor of the late, great George Carlin. Got any others? Please share them with us in the Comments section. (But make sure theyre appropriate enough to pass the censors wink wink)Just for fun Who would put manure dodge ball on their resume? How To Tailor Your Resume

How To Tailor Your Resume How To Tailor Your Resume In today’s world everything is customized. This includes your resume when applying for jobs. You can be strategic about landing your dream job and tailor your resume for every job you apply to. Let’s take a look at when it’s necessary to tailor your resume for a role, plus some actionable tips to present the best version of yourself. When? If You Are Especially Interested In a Company If a company or role especially piques your interest, it is worth spending a bit more time to tweak your resume, and it’s also worth writing a cover letter. Your targeting will pay off by helping your resume stand out to the recruiter or hiring manager. Applying to Different Roles Within Your Career Field Tailoring your resume is especially necessary if you are applying for roles that require slightly different skills within the same field. For example, if you apply for positions as a marketing writer or content marketer, as opposed to, say, social media manager, using the same resume points to apply for both does not allow you to showcase the best of your skills or how your past experience prepared you for that specific role. You may be qualified for the position, but the recruiter or hiring manager wouldn’t know this looking at your resume because you didn’t include your most relevant accomplishments. Even if you are in a hurry to apply, it is still worth taking another look at your resume bullet points for any quick phrasing changes that could help your resume stand out. This is especially true when applying to large companies, many of which use a program to screen resumes before they reach an individual’s eyes. In this scenario, choosing the right words is the key to your re sume passing through to reach a recruiter or hiring manager. Always ‘“Tailor’” Your Resume The real answer to this question is â€" always. If you send off a generic resume, you significantly lower your chance of response and chance of an invitation for an interview. While you can reuse some of the same bullet points for multiple positions, you should always review the position requirements beforehand. So, technically, each resume is considered tailored since you’ve consulted the position description and given some thought to the best points you can make to present yourself as an attractive candidate. How? Prepare Your Resume Bullets Before Your Job Search Devise a list of resume bullet points and accomplishments. This will save time. Creating a concise, meaningful resume bullet is a thought-provoking exercise that should not be rushed. Designating the time to write, review and revise these bullet points will ensure they are well-written and full of meaning. Also, it will save you from the egregious application sin of typos on your resume. By completing this step first, it will be easy to tailor your resume for each position because you can simply switch out your prepared bullets instead of writing them as you go. Read the Job Qualifications, Responsibilities and Skills To tailor your resume for a role, you must read the position description and understand who the company considers an outstanding candidate. Since you already have prepared your list of bullet points, you can now switch them depending on what the role requires. You can also easily tweak your resume bullet points, exchanging one word with another and using specific words the company includes in its post and listed responsibilities. Include Specifics In Your Resume What have you accomplished in your past that showcases your potential to execute the responsibilities of the position? The more specific you are about any numeric results, like how your campaign added $10,000 worth of revenue to the organization, the better. After reading the position requirements choose a few requirements or skills to target with each resume bullet. If you have numbers or data results that showcase your accomplishments, include one in each resume bullet point. Sell Yourself After reading the job post you can expertly profile and present yourself to meet the company’s listed demands. Choose the resume bullet points that help you best sell yourself. Consider each company and individual recruiter or hiring manager as someone you’re persuading. You aren’t just sending your resume off into cyberspace; you’re convincing an individual why you are the best pick for the job. What are the points that are most relevant and compelling in persuading a recruiter or hiring manager that you are the best choice for the role? Luckily, you only have to be convincing enough that the company decides to call you about an interview. Now is also a great time to explore your personal brand and reflect on the value you could bring an organization. And if you score an interview you’ll already be prepared to expand on your strong suits.   Avoid This One Typical Mistake DO NOT label the different versions of your resume documents with obvious designations, like Resume Version A or Resume 2, because the company will see it on your document. Be a little more subtle with your labeling. Also, ensure your resume is compatible with the company’s application process so the recruiter or hiring manager are able to open the document.

3 New Years Work Resolutions Worth Making - The Muse

3 New Years Work Resolutions Worth Making - The Muse 3 New Years Work Resolutions Worth Making The first day of the new year is always the same. You start off strong, a long list of resolutions planned, ready to conquer your career goals. And you do- for a week, maybe two, or even a few months if you’re on a roll. Then, something throws you off track. The culprit may just be a seemingly insignificant workplace annoyance, but it has the power to affect your motivation in a big way. It’s easy to become discouraged and frustrated when resolutions don’t go as planned. If, for example, you made it a goal to organize your desk every morning, but are called into an unscheduled, impromptu meeting first thing one day, it’s natural to think, “Well, I missed today,” letting yourself off the hook. The problem is you forget the next day and for weeks after that. Soon enough, you abandon your goal to get more organized altogether. And such begins the cycle of self-doubt and frustration that ultimately leads to you dropping your resolutions completely. There are a few basic reasons these ambitious goals flop, including overcommitting and attempting to change too much too quickly. Bad habits are hard to break, but it’s even harder to establish new ones. Trying to undo behaviors that have become second-nature is like trying to rewire your brain. In order to help you avoid the usual pitfalls and see your goals to fruition this year, here are three career-related new year’s resolutions you should avoid- and three better goals to aim for instead. Goal #1: Get a Promotion or Raise It’s easy to get caught up in the hype and make half-hearted resolutions that you’re not really serious about. At a loss for a better idea or because of pressure from friends and family, you might land on getting a raise or promotion. After all, everyone wants to make more money or have more responsibility, so why not resolve to do so? Why it Will Fail If the above scenario sounds like you, you probably won’t be working toward this resolution long. Why? Because you likely lack the personal motivation to accomplish it. Goals made because you feel pressured to make them are destined to fail because the commitment just doesn’t exist. While the thought of getting a promotion is intriguing, you may not be ready to take the steps required to make it a reality. You have to be steadfast in your decision and prepared for the longer hours and larger workloads that may accompany it. This plan is also inherently flawed because it depends heavily upon someone else’s judgment. You may be deserving of the raise, but ultimately, higher authorities must sign off. Goals that rely too much on factors beyond your control can be easily derailed, no matter how hard you try to see them through. A resolution centered on earning a raise or promotion also suffers from the problem of the “arrival fallacy:” when we fixate so intensely on a reward that when it arrives, it does not produce the anticipated response. It’s easy to think, “I’ll be happy when…” about a promotion, but this isn’t always the case. Instead of feeling accomplished, for example, you might feel unchanged or even disappointed because you realize the promotion or raise didn’t actually amount to much. Yes, you may get paid more or have more responsibilities, but your work life won’t suddenly be perfect, and your career won’t peak overnight. The Upgraded Resolution To make this resolution attainable, shift from aiming for a promotion to focusing on continual improvement. You should be concerned with becoming the type of employee worthy of a raise or promotion. That means zoning in on the skills, traits, and attributes that, if mastered, would make you into a high-value member of your team. Consider speaking with your supervisor about what qualities your company looks for in candidates for promotion, then work toward those specific milestones. Goal #2: Attend More Networking Events This is a common one because the connection between networking and career success is a much-talked-about phenomenon. You’ve probably heard people say, “It’s all about who you know,” or maybe you’ve seen this philosophy at work in your office. Why it Will Fail The difficulty with this resolution, admirable as it may be, is that you’re likely forgetting to account for the time it will take to accomplish. Networking means dedicating time to social events, attending conferences, or joining a professional organization. How will these added commitments fit into your already busy schedule? The answer is, they probably won’t. If you’re struggling to keep up with your current responsibilities, trying to add a goal like this one will almost certainly fail. The Upgraded Resolution Just because you can’t fit this into your schedule this very second doesn’t mean you should toss it in the trash. If it’s important to you and your professional development, it’s worth taking stock of your responsibilities and making networking a priority. Start by making a “to-don’t list.” Identify which of your current commitments are most important, and eliminate the rest. No one likes to feel like they’re letting someone down or going back on promises, so saying no to or ending a commitment can be difficult. But, if you’re serious about achieving your goals, then you have to be dedicated to eliminating anything that doesn’t directly contribute to your success. If, for example, you have been helping a co-worker run a subcommittee that isn’t part of your job description, it may be time to pull back in order to free up time for more networking. Goal #3: Be More Assertive Whether you want to work on your delegation skills, say no to additional responsibilities more often, or establish better work-life boundaries, one of the most common workplace resolutions is a declaration to be more assertive. Developing self-assuredness is a worthy goal, especially since passivity can make you feel out of control and may even lead to co-workers treating you like a pushover. Unfortunately, though, simply vowing to do this probably won’t have the impact you want it to. Why it Will Fail The issue is that it’s far too open-ended. It’s not specific or measureable; thus, it’s far too easy to break. There are no set guidelines for what achieving “assertiveness” means or looks like, no steps for you to take or milestones to work toward. Without those metrics, you’re likely to lose sight of your goal or become frustrated with your lack of improvement before you even give it a chance. The Upgraded Resolution In order to make this achievable, narrow the scope. In what specific ways do you want to be more assertive? How do you plan to operationalize your goal into small, actionable steps that you can complete over time? These answers will be different for everyone, so you’ll need to customize your plan to suit your particular goals. If you’re concerned you don’t speak up enough at work, focus on seizing opportunities to contribute ideas during meeting. Establish a routine of brainstorming 10 ideas for new projects to present in staff meetings. Or, take a public speaking or improv class to get used to talking in front of a group. If you’re a people pleaser, you’ll want to include goals that deal with refusing to take on too many responsibilities. Practice setting expectations with your boss, and establish guidelines for politely turning others down. Saying “no” flat out might be too harsh, but it’s completely acceptable to negotiate a new timeline that fits your busy schedule. While the new year is a great time to reflect upon your career, workplace achievements, and areas in which you would like to improve, there’s absolutely no reason for you to place so much pressure of progress on a single date. Change doesn’t happen overnight. Success at anything is the result of time, practice, and the development of good habits. Self-evaluate and adjust your goals year-round- not just on January 1st. If you slip up every now and then it’s OK! Think of your missteps as an opportunity to reflect, pivot, and keep working toward your dreams.

A look at the daily routine of Benjamin Franklin, who didnt always follow his own early to bed, early to rise advice

A look at the daily routine of Benjamin Franklin, who didn't always follow his own 'early to bed, early to rise' advice A look at the daily routine of Benjamin Franklin, who didn't always follow his own 'early to bed, early to rise' advice Benjamin Franklin  was a true Renaissance man. After getting his start in the printing business, he went on to establish himself as a leading writer and political thinker in the English colonies in North America;  invent  the lightning rod, bifocals, and swim fins; make a number of crucial scientific discoveries; and help draft the  Declaration of Independence  and secure his country’s’ freedom from England. The  Founding Father  got a lot done, so it’s no surprise that he earned the unofficial moniker of “First American.”And it’s definitely not a shock that he was pretty intentional about his time, according to his autobiography. Here’s a breakdown of what Franklin’s days looked like:You probably know the old cliche, which is popularly attributed to Franklin: “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.” According to his autobiography, the Founding Father did wake up early, rising at 5 a.m.He would then wash up and practice positivity and gr atitude by addressing “Powerful Goodness.” This “Powerful Goodness” was Franklin’s concept of God. The Founding Father was a Deist, meaning he believed in a higher being. As part of his daily routine, Franklin would also rate himself on 13 virtues -  temperance, silence, order, resolution, frugality, industry, sincerity, justice, moderation, cleanliness, tranquility, chastity and humility.Every week, Franklin would pick a different virtue to focus on and note his failings on a special chart. In his autobiography, he wrote, “I was surprised to find myself so much fuller of faults than I had imagined; but I had the satisfaction of seeing them diminish.”Franklin would also break his fast before 8 a.m. It’s unclear what breakfast foods he favored…But it is known that he had a particular hankering for cranberries, honey, and, of course, apples. Not surprising, given the phrase “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” is commonly attributed to the statesman - though t he saying actually predates Franklin.Franklin even once wrote a letter criticizing his wife Deborah for forgetting to ship him a barrel of apples while he was living abroad. After eating, Franklin would work until noon. Over the years, the nature of this work varied as the Founding Father’s career took a number of twists and turns.Franklin’s hypothetical résumé could feature the titles of statesman, printer, author, scientist, inventor, diplomat, drafter of the Declaration of Independence, and delegate to the Constitutional Convention. So it’s safe to say that his schedule likely varied based on his role and other circumstances.Still, on an average day, Franklin wrote that he would “read or overlook my accounts, and dine” from noon to 2 p.m. This midday dinner was Franklin’s primary meal of the day. In terms of Franklin’s favorite foods, we do know that he wrote about his approval of potatoes, ginseng, maple syrup, corn, parmesan cheese, and turkey.Franklin can also b e credited with helping to introduce tofu, rhubarb, and Scottish kale to colonial America.By two o’clock in the afternoon, Franklin went back to work, and he would keep at it until 6 p.m. in the evening.Franklin is popularly imagined as a somewhat portly, gout-ridden older man, but he was far more active and athletic in his youth. According to Real Clear Science, he kept in shape as a typesetter by “running up and down stairs with heavy trays of lead type” and foregoing alcohol in favor of water. He was also a competent swimmer and was even honored by the International Swimming Hall of Fame. He once clocked a three and a half mile swim in the Thames, going from Chelsea to Blackfriars. From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., Franklin wrote that he liked to “put things in their places,” eat supper, and enjoy music and conversation. The Founding Father played the viola da gamba, and even invented a musical instrument: the glass harmonica. After all that, Franklin said he would commence with an “examination of the day.”Franklin would then turn in at 10 p.m. and proceed to sleep for seven hours.John Adams wrote that Franklin “believed in the benefits of fresh air at night” -  contrary to popular opinion at the time, which lambasted night air as unhealthy -  and slept with the window open. Adams learned this the hard way. He and Franklin had to share a bed in September 1776 while traveling together.Of course, Franklin himself would admit that he wasn’t always perfect about applying some of his popular wisdom to his own life.Adams would agree. The two men worked together in Paris while attempting to convince the French monarchy to support their revolutionary cause. He got to witness his colleague’s daily behaviors up close, and he wasn’t always impressed. While he may have abstained from booze earlier in his life, Adams wrote that Franklin enjoyed his champagne while in France. Franklin also praised wine in a 1777 letter, writing that the beverage is “… a constant proof that God loves us, and loves to see us happy.”Franklin also recorded a number of euphemisms for being drunk under the alias Silence Dogood in 1736. His suggestions included “Been too free with Sir John Strawberry,” “He’s contending with Pharaoh,” and “He’s Eat a Toad and half for Breakfast.”Historian David McCullough wrote that Adams, who had read Poor Richard’s Almanack growing up, was dismayed to see his “idolized sage” forsake his “early to bed, early to rise” advice in favor of rising at 10 a.m.While Franklin sometimes fell short of his lofty scheduling ambitions, that didn’t stop him from accomplishing much in his 84 years. And his writings continue to inspire readers to strive to lead productive, fulfilling, and healthy lives.Source:  Business Insider,  Britannica,  Britannica, “The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin“  This article was originally posted on BusinessInsider.com.

Why Work-Life Balance Doesnt Make Sense - The Muse

Why Work-Life Balance Doesnt Make Sense - The Muse Why Work-Life Balance Doesnt Make Sense People talk about work-life balance as if achieving it is the precious key to happiness. Tips and tricks abound. But there are two big problems with this supposed golden ticket. First, the very phrase suggests that work isn’t part of your life, it’s separate. Yet your career probably takes up a huge amount of your waking hours, so how could it not be an integral part of your life? The second issue is that balance is elusive and rarely attainable. At its core, the act of balancing is both inflexible and delicate, but life requires flexibility. So on your quest for happiness, success, and fulfillment, there’s actually another “B” word you should get excited about. That word is boundaries. Develop a boundary-setting practice, and you’ll wonder why anyone is still talking about work-life balance. It’s fine to value stability, but since life isn’t still, putting balance on a pedestal is problematic. Think of all the moving parts in a given week: big meetings, work travel, doctor’s appointments, family events, internet outages, a co-worker quitting, another one getting promoted, a lost Uber driver on the way to the networking event. Life, as you know, throws curveballs- like when your boss gets feedback from the client that he needs to push a deadline up and all of a sudden your planned 6 PM departure goes out the window, and instead of going to your favorite boxing class, you work late and pass out at 2 AM. On that kind of unpredictable day, it’s pretty hard to feel good about the whole work-life balance thing. You can, however, feel good about boundaries, which put you in the driver’s seat with the understanding that stuff happens and won’t always go as planned. You can regularly reconfigure how your day and week is going to play out based on professional responsibilities and personal needs and not freak out if one day is all work and zero play. Here are three ways to ditch balance and embrace boundaries: 1. Set Your Boundaries Daily Based on Your Priorities The amount of time or effort you’re willing to put into a work day, planning a friend’s engagement party, or blogging will change based on what each day looks like. If your boyfriend’s 30th birthday involves you pulling off a surprise party with all his friends, you’re probably not going to volunteer for a time-sensitive work project. If you’re in the middle of putting together a conference, you’re probably not going to double your volunteer hours. When you learn to set boundaries based on your various priorities and obligations, you’ll feel in control and at liberty to make decisions that work for you and the kind of life you want to lead- not the kind of life you're supposed to lead. 2. Practice Establishing Your Boundaries With Others Let people know what you’re up to. Tell your colleagues and friends why you’re doing away with the idea of work-life balance and explain how your boundaries mean you can’t meet for happy hour as frequently as you used to. Up for a promotion? Speak to your significant other about working a few late nights while the higher ups are making a decision on your advancement. By sharing some details of your boundary practice with the people in your life, you give them an opportunity to support your goals instead of constantly tempting you with invitations that threaten to step on the lines you’ve drawn. 3. Understand Your Boundaries by Failing First Sometimes you have to slip up to learn about your boundaries; redefining them is a part of the process. Pushing yourself too hard, or underestimating how long something takes will help you draw better, clearer lines in the future. Let’s say you’re having a relatively busy week at work, but it’s important for you to make time for friends and get in a long bike ride. Even though you think the way you’ve planned it makes sense, you end up sacrificing sleep, which leads to a longer day at the office because you’re unfocused and easily distracted. That leads to bailing on dinner and drinks. Don’t stress over the change of plans- just know that next week, you’ll tweak your boundaries. The packed briefing was convened in conjunction with the House Manufacturing Caucus as part of a series of manufacturing briefings being held throughout the year. J. Robert Sims, past president of ASME, welcomed the audience and introduced the co-chairs of the Manufacturing Caucus, Congressmen Tim Ryan (D-OH) and Tom Reed (R-NY). The co-chairs provided opening remarks focusing on the key role that advanced manufacturing plays in maintaining and improving the strength of the U.S. economy and highlighted the role of Congress in ensuring proper investments in this field. The briefing consisted of an impressive panel of experts on advanced manufacturing, which included Nicholas M. Donofrio, IBM Fellow Emeritus, former IBM executive vice president for Innovation and Technology, and recent chair of the National Academy of Engineerings Study Committee on Making Value for America; Nam P. Suh, former president of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT, and recipient of the ASME Medal for Distinguished Mechanical Engineering Achievements; and Deborah Wince-Smith, president and CEO of the United States Council on Competitiveness and former assistant secretary for technology policy in the United States Department of Commerce.
