It could be the draining commute, or the less than desirable lunch choices of your cube neighbor, if you even have a cube to speak of. Queue a new job reality: diminished expectations. Of course we all want a satisfying job that we love, but until the economy improves, you’ll have to find ways to to survive, both mentally, and while on the job. Here are 10 tips for coping in a job you don’t love: 1.) The Power of Positive Thinking Use affirmations throughout the day to lift your spirits up. Tell yourself positive stories about your job. 2.) Continue to Challenge Yourself Once a month, choose a new skill to practice. Try your hand at website development, Excel, Powerpoint, or statistical analysis, which will exercise your analytical thinking and charting skills. 3.) Start a Blog Although ranting is acceptable, using the blog as a way to process your thoughts and insights about the positive things that happened throughout the day, or at your job is a much more effective use of time. 4.) Update Your Resume At least once a month you will want to polish your resume. Frequent updates to your online profile will help you stand out as a more attractive candidate. 5.) Lend a Helping Hand Do something for a co-worker or someone else in your life. There is huge reward in both volunteering, and in helping a co-worker out. You can learn to cultivate gratitude for volunteering your time, and perhaps even learn a new skill. Either way, you get the karma points. 6.) Consider Your Future Contemplate what you want your future to look like. Review your life as whole, and all your decisions, wins, failures, and your current situation. Even imagine your dream job. Write a detailed description, and then examine any gaps in your resume. 7.) Make Connections Network with professionals in your desired industry or role. Once you’ve finished the aforementioned tasks, you’ll be better prepared to make this succeed. 8.) Ask for Help Reach out to a career coach to review, and perhaps alter, your plans for the future.
